The African Speculative Fiction Society announced the contenders for the Nommo Awards 2017 on April 4, 2017. The writers announced are shortlisted for Best Novel, Best Novella, Best Short Story, and Best Graphic Novel, chosen from eligible works published in 2015 or 2016.
The African Speculative Fiction Society, a new community of writers, editors, publishers and artists of African Science Fiction and Fantasy, announced itself on the African literary scene last year. They promptly pronounced a new recognition for people who write the type of writing they dig and called it The Nommo Awards. The new award would be worth either US$ or US$1,000 to the winners.
The team behind the awards announced their list of shortlisted writes in the running for the new honours on April 4th. Some of those who feature on the honours list include Nnedi Okorafor’s Binti in the Best Novella category. Okorafor is in the running alongside Dilman Dila and Muthi Nhlema. The best novel sees Azotus, The Kingdom by Shadreck Chikoti, which we loved, going against A. Igoni Barrett.
The best short story features Commonwealth Short Story Prize for Africa 2015 winner Lesley Nneka Arimah, Writivism Short Story Prize 2016 winner Innocent Immaculate Acan, Tendai Huchu, Blaize Kaye, and Wole Talabi. Also featuring is best graphic novel with Xavier Ighorodje & Stanley Obende as well as Jide Martin & Toheeb Deen Ipaye for Might of Guardian Prime.
