The Nommo Awards 2018 shortlists for the best novel, novella, short story and graphic novel by an African this year have been announced. The Nommo Awards are an initiative of the African Speculative fiction Society.
The Nommo Awards were introduced by the African Speculative Fiction Society to cast a much needed focus on the writing that could be called “different” in 2017. This different under focus was magical realism, Sci-Fi and everything that would fail to get a space in the “standard spaces” that we are familiar with.
The winners for the first edition were announced at the Ake Festival 2017 and those who went home triumphant were Tade Thompson for Best Novel for Rosewater and Nnedi Okorafor for Best Novella for Binti. The Best Short Story was a tie with the glory being shared by Tendai Huchu for The Marriage Plot and Lesley Nneka Arimah for Who Will Greet You At Home while the Best Graphic Novel was The Corpse Exhibition by Chimurenga Chronic no. 3 Various writers and artists edited by Ntone Edjabe.
The 2018 edition of the awards started in February with a call out by the African Speculative Fiction Society and earlier today, April 19, they announced those in the running. This award is a bit strange, like the content it chooses I suppose, because they announce both longlists and shortlists for the prizes on the same day.
