Eight African writers are in the running with seven books on cooking published in Africa at The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2018. They are Yemisi Arbisala, Muriel Emekunle Davies, Ednah Rosen, David & Tamminay Otoo, Jasmine Macharia, and Nico Verster.
The Gourmand Awards started in 1995 for cookbooks and wine books at Frankfurt Book Fair are the major Food Culture event in the world. They now include all Food Culture content. They are open to all, big or small, print or digital, for sale or for free, with or without ISBN, trade or self-published, private or public, in any language. It is free to participate, anyone can send entries.
Every year the awards are handed out in categories like Food Person of the Year. Hall of Fame, Chef / Restaurant, Woman Chef. We are a book blog of course and as much as we are fans of food and general eating to live, our interest in this award is in the cook book category which is divided by continent. Those in the running for the best cookbook coming out of Africa are;
- Botswana – Taste of Botswana, Ednah Rosen (Rosen Media)
- Ghana- Authentic African Cuisine from Ghana, David &Tamminay Otoo (Sankofa Wiase)
- Kenya – Breakfast with the King, Jasmine Macharia
- Mali – Les Gourmandises de Dilly, Oumou Nomoko (Editions Afel Aissa, Bamako)
- Nigeria – Long Throat Memoirs, Yemisi Arbisala (Cassava Republic)
- Sierra Leone – What’s Cooking? Muriel Emekunle Davies
- South Africa – Safari and Spices, Nico Verster (Jacana)
The winners of the award of best cookbook from Africa will be revealed on May 26-27, 2018.
