A. Igoni Barrett will reprise his role as a judge for the Graywolf Press Africa Prize 2019. Submissions for the prize open on May 1, 2019.
Graywolf Press, founded by Scott Walker in Port Townsend, Washington, USA, has published some of the best writers from Africa. These include Nuruddin Farah (Sweet and Sour Milk, 2006), Tsitsi Dangarembga (This Mournable Body, 2018), Binyavanga Wainaina (One Day I Will Write About This Place, 2012), and Anouar Benmalek (The Lovers of Algeria, 2004).
In 2018, the press inaugurated the Graywolf Press Africa Prize, a manuscript prize to be judged by A Igoni Barrett, where an African writer would go home with the princely sum of US$12,000. A. Igoni Barrett is the writer of Love Is Power, or Something Like That (2013) and Blackass (2016) both published by Graywolf Press. The literary glory in 2018 would go to Kenyan poet Khadija Abdalla Bajaber for her manuscript The House of Rust.
The 2019 season of the competition is upon us again and Graywolf Press has announced that the submission period for the second Graywolf Press Africa Prize will run from May 1-31, 2019. The prize will be awarded for a first novel manuscript by an African author primarily residing in Africa and will again be judged by A. Igoni Barrett in conjunction with the Graywolf editors.
If you happen to have a manuscript lying around then I suggest that you polish it off and prepare to send it to our friends at Graywolf Press starting from May 1. The winning manuscript will receive a $12,000 advance and publication by Graywolf Press, which will include a dedicated effort to making the book available in major markets in African countries. It will also be published in Italy by 66thand2nd, in partnership with Graywolf Press.
