Abdulrazak Gurnah is the headline guest at this year’s Sharjah International Book Fair set to run from November 3-13, 2021.
Sharjah International Book Fair is an international book fair held annually in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates since 1982. Recognized as one of the world’s top publishing events, it is the largest in the Arab world with millions of visitors accessing up to 20 million books, all under one roof. Activities at the fair include book readings, panel discussion, film screenings, poetry performances, and loads more. One of the unique offerings of the fair is the Publishers Conference which attracts publishers, wholesalers and booksellers from all over the world.
For 2021, the fair has announced its headliner as newly minted Nobel Prize Laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah. It will be the Tanzanian author and professor’s first event after being declared the winner of the prize. He will be among 85 literary figures taking part in this iteration of the fair. These include Candice Carty-Williams, Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi, Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor, Peter Kimani, and many more.
Apart from the personalities, there will be more than 1,500 publishers from 83 countries participating in the book fair. Nine countries will be marking their inaugural appearance at this year’s iteration: South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Rwanda, Cameron and Colombia.
