The Tamil translation of Abubakar Adam Ibrahim’s debut novel Season of Crimson Blossoms was announced as Tamil’s best translation of the year on December 8, 2019.
Abubakar Adam Ibrahim is well known in African literary circles for the short story collection The Whispering Trees (2012) and the novel Season of Crimson Blossoms (2015). The latter focused on a sexual relationship between an older woman and a young gangster in ultra-conservative Northern Nigeria. This novel which gave a unique perspective on life and relationships in Northern Nigeria won the Nigerian Prize for Literature in 2016.
Since then, the book has been getting into new markets with the German translation of the book being published in August. Western Europeans are now enjoying the story of Hajiya Binta, Reza and all the rest.
A new translation of the novel in Tamil by Latha Arunachalam was published by Zero Degree publishing this year. It is emerging that the translation was declared the best translation of the year award in the Asian country. The novelist shared the news on his social media this past Sunday and we couldn’t be more excited.
