The Abuja Writers Forum curated by Dr Emman Shehu convened on Saturday 26th March 2016 at the Nanet Suites in Nigeria’s capital city.
So what were you up to on Saturday night? Well if you are in Abuja and love the written word then the best option is the Abuja Writers Forum which happens on the last Saturday of every month. The forum was established to encourage the creative writing potentials of Nigerians and Africa. Every month since June 2008, they have hosted their Guest Writer Session featuring writers from all over the country. You can read more about the AWF here.
This time round the featured writers were Halima Aliyu and Benjamin Ubiri. Aliyu, a graduate of Law from Ahmadu Bello University, is the managing editor at AMAB Books & Publishing based in Minna, Niger State and teaches Creative Writing at the HilltopArts International Centre. She is also a fellow of the Ebedi International Writers Residency. She read from her short story collection Fire On The Tip of Ice (AfricanWriter’s review).
On his part, Ubiri is a broadcaster, journalist, actor, stage director, compere and performance poet. The winner of the 2009 literary journalist of the year award by Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) was born in Kano but hails from Otor-Iyede in Isoko –North Local Government Area of Delta State. He read from his recently published collection of poems, The Book of Chibok.
It wasn’t just artists who have mastered the written word with a mini art exhibition segment featuring the works of Danladi Kole Bako. Bako is contemporary urban artist who has carved for himself a niche through his “drum art”.
