The Ake Arts and Book Festival 2023 is set to return to Lagos, Nigeria from November 22 – 25, 2023. This information was shared by organisers on Monday, June 12, 2023.
The Ake Arts and Book Festival was founded by Lola Shoneyin in Nigeria in 2013. The festival with its unique offering of book readings, panel discussions, poetry recitals, film screenings, theatre, and music performances quickly became one of the must-attend events on the literary scene on the continent.
In 2022, the organisers stated that that year’s edition would be its last leading to a huge beeline to Lagos to attend the final Ake Festival in November (read our report of that event here). It was seen to be a worthy farewell to an event that had come close to the hearts of those who had followed the project over the last decade.
In May, the Ake Festival was nominated for the International Aficionado Award and while sharing the news they had us speculating on their return.
On Monday, the festival organisers announced that it would be running for the 11th edition yet again. Like in previous years, the artists who joined in the fun in Lagos would take part in “Project Inspire” where they will go to different schools around the city. Alongside the usual offering at the festival, we can expect the return of the Ake Review which has always come with the headliner as the cover subject.
Information on the headliner, guests, program, and more is not yet available. What we do know is that now festival dates are known so we recommend that you block off the dates on the last weekend of November.
