Ake Review 2019 makes callout for submissions of prose, poetry, and artwork.

The Ake Arts and Book Festival made a callout for submissions of prose, poetry, and artwork for the Ake Review 2019 on June 20, 2019.

The Ake Review, a publication of the Ake Arts and Book Festival, is one of the best journals from a literary festival on the continent. The covers famously feature the legends that have headlined the Ake Festival like Ama Ata Aidoo, Nuruddin Farah, Wole Soyinka, Niyi Osundare and Ngugi Wa Thiong’o. The content features interviews with festival delegates as well as poetry, prose, and artwork that has been submitted in line with the theme of the year.

The journal has made a callout for submissions of prose, poetry, and artwork around this year’s theme “Black Bodies, Grey Matter.” The submissions sought should explain the link between the mental and the physical, and explore specific phenomena such as scarification, body image, tattoos, stereotyping, gender nonconformity, colourism, and issues around mental health within an African context.

If you are interested you need to make ONE original and unpublished entry in the categories;

1. Poetry – Up to 3 Poems
2. Fiction – No more than 1,600 words
3. Artwork – Up to 2 high-res jpeg works
4. A bio of no longer than 70 words

Send your entry to editor@akefestival.org as attachments with ‘AR Submission’ in the subject line. Successful contributors receive 2 copies of Ake Review and a token payment which will be communicated upon acceptance.

Deadline for submission is Thursday, July 8, 2019.
