Akwaeke Emezi’s novel Pet is on the longlist for the National Book Awards 2019 in the Young People’s Literature category announced on September 16, 2019.
The US National Book Foundation presents the National Book Awards and two-lifetime achievement awards to authors every November. The awards are handed out in the categories of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, translated literature, and young people’s literature. The judges in the young people’s literature category announced today are novelists An Na and Elana K. Arnold as well as book store owner Kristen Gilligan, novelist and academic Varian Johnson, and retired librarian and academic Deborah Taylor.

The longlist for the young people’s literature category announced on Monday morning features Akwaeke Emezi’s new young adult title Pet which follows a transgender teen living in a dystopia plagued by monsters.
The foundation will announce the shortlist on October 8 then the winners will be revealed at the National Book Awards ceremony and benefit dinner on November 20 in New York City, USA.
