Alex Kadiri wins Afritondo Short Story Prize 2023.

Alex Kadiri has been named the winner of the Afritondo Short Story Prize 2023 today, Friday, April 7, 2023.

Afritondo, a platform that aims to connect with and tell the stories of African and black minority populations across the globe, is the organisation behind the Afritondo Short Story Prize. Previous winners have been Howard Meh-Buh Maximus, Jarred Thompson, and Desta Haile.

The judging panel for the award for 2023 comprises Ugandan author Doreen Baingana, Ghanaian author Ayesha Harruna Attah, and Zambian-Ghanaian writer and editor Efemia Chela. They announced the longlist on February 11 before the shortlist was revealed on Saturday, March 11.

The winner of the award, announced at a virtual ceremony, is Nigerian writer Alex Kadiri for his short story The Hyena and The Two-Headed Goat.

The judges were also very complimentary of the entries on the longlist. Ayesha Harruna Attah said: “I thought that the stories were amazing, they were diverse, they were surprising. They were such tender stories. They upended the theme of aliens, and what was interesting to me was outsiders became familiar in almost every single one of these stories.”

He goes home with the US$1,000 prize money. An anthology of the longlist is expected later in the year. His short story with also feature in the Afritondo anthology to be published later in the year.
