Alexander Nderitu Prize For World Literature 2024 shortlist announced

The Alexander Nderitu Prize For World Literature 2024 shortlist was announced in Nairobi on Thursday, January 9, 2025.

The Alexander Nderitu Prize For World Literature is a new prize awarded to the best unpublished short story from anywhere in the world. Aimed at launching new literary stars, it is named for Kenyan writer and critic Alexander Nderitu, a recipient of a Share Africa Climate Fiction Award, a Sahitto Literature Jury Award, and a Sevhage-Agema Founders’ Prize for African Criticism.

The submissions for the first edition with the theme “peace” came from Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, Eswatini, South Sudan, Zimbabwe, Poland, Malawi, The Gambia, Sri Lanka, the USA, Botswana, and Tanzania. The longlist of ten was announced on Saturday, November 30.

The shortlist announced on January 9 features the following short story writers;

  • The Pregnant Ghost, Haliru Ali Musa (Nigeria)
  • Mortuary, Ekenedirichukwu Anselm Alita (Nigeria)
  • Beauty’s in a Mark, Kagira George (Kenya)
  • Call of the Sandy Tombs, Kaluwe Haangala (Zambia)
  • Mama Tekla’s Sunset, J.E.Sibi-Okumu (Kenya)

The shortlisted stories will be published on TheAfricanGriot.com. The authors can also have their stories published in Sri Lanka and receive agent representation in Asia for at least one year. The winner will also walk away with a cash prize of Kshs 100,000.
