In 2020, we introduced the James Murua Literary LiveStream to shine a light on the African literary ecosystem and ways to make it better. The Poetry Session: The DR Congo and Germany
Poetry, one of the world’s most popular literary forms, has been used by many to describe how they experience the world both internally and externally. On this month’s livestream, we speak to two of the foremost poetry producers in the DR Congo and Germany. We find out the influences that poets in their part of the world have dealt with alongside their challenges and opportunities.
We also find out what the African and Black literary community that we have been missing from the work in their communities with a focus on form as well as on the must watch out for names.
Do Nsoseme Dora
Do Nsoseme Dora is a Congolese poet (poetess), spoken word artist, photographer and actress who lives and works in Kinshasa, where she was born and studied. She holds a Bachelor degree in Visual Communication from the Academy of Fine Arts of Kinshasa, preceded by a high-school diploma in Latin-Philo.
Since 2015, she has participated in major projects such as the “slam our world” project organized by the Royal Flemish Theatre (KVS); the photo exhibition entitled “Kinshasa 2050”, organized by the Goethe-Institut, in collaboration with the Institut Français de Kinshasa, where she presented a photographic series. She also did a collective residency in Brazzaville, with Sahm workshops, as part of the “Rencontre Internationale d’Art Contemporain” (RIAC – International Encounter of Contemporary Arts). Recently, she exhibited her photographic works during the 6th edition of the Lubumbashi Biennial.
She recently launched a spoken word video clip dedicated to celebrating women and reminding them of the path they still have to cover to reap the glory that is reserved for them.
Anja Saleh
Anja Saleh is a political advisor, artist, poet and author of Soon, The Future Of Memory, her first full-length poetry collection published in June 2021 with Edition Assemblage in Germany.
Educated in political and social sciences, Anja Saleh’s research and art focuses on memory-culture and -politics and its meaning for the future.The past years she spent leading political education projects that used art as a means to highlight voices and realities by young adults from underserved and racialized communities in Germany, as well as consulting and offering workshops to selected organisations on anti-racism approaches in different fields and the intersection of art and social impact.
Her learnings and experiences are currently put into practice to coordinate the 2020 founded Datteltäter Academy that offers a yearly fellowship program to young, critical and promising artists in the EU. In 2018 Anja Saleh founded TAVII Studio, a cultural project and fair trade jewellery shop that centres artisans and genuine artisanship in collaboration with artisans in Cairo, Egypt; Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso and Berlin, Germany.
