In our continuing series to introduce, and reintroduce, you to literary magazines from African and Black writing, we present The ArabLit Quarterly, Doek!, and Pree.
A literary magazine publishes short stories, poetry, and essays, along with literary criticism, book reviews, as well as biographical profiles of authors, interviews, and letters. In a magazine, one reads wonderful voices, many new, in a digestible form. In June, we introduced you to Fiyah, Libretto, and Lolwe, fine publications giving you some of the best writing out there.
For July, we introduce you to three more journals that have come out in the recent past from around African and Black writing world.
ArabLit Quarterly Summer 2020, the CRIME Issue

ArabLit Quarterly is a four-times-yearly magazine that brings together Arabic literature, essays, wordplay, art, music, and food in translation, founded in 2018 by Arablit.org’s M Lynx Qualey.
The most recent edition of ArabLit Quarterly themed around “Crime” was published on June 30 and features the work of Egyptians Sonallah Ibrahim. Abdallah Kamal, and Tareq Emam, the great Sudanese writer Abdelaziz Baraka Sakin, Iraqis Montasser Al-Qaffash, Raghad Qasim, and Azher Jirjees.

Doek!
Recent issue: July 1, 2020
Doek! is a free, independent, and pan-African online literary magazine produced in Windhoek, Namibia. It publishes short fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art from Namibia and the African diaspora. Founded by Mutaleni Nadimi and Rémy Ngamije, Doek! is an important step—but not the only step—towards creating a diverse, curious, and robust literary culture in Namibia. By publishing diverse writers and visual artists, Doek! seeks to provide an encounter—a first and equal meeting—between the known and unknown, between local and international storytellers and a global audience.
The newest edition of the magazine features work by Jessemuse Cacinda, Mubanga Kalimamukwento, Troy Onyango, Mohammed Shehu, Rémy Ngamije, Ros Limbo, Yara Monteiro, Mandisa Buthulezi, James Jamu, and many other amazing artists.

PREE is an online magazine for new contemporary writing from and about the Caribbean. They publish original works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, essays, interviews and experimental writing, giving their authors international visibility far beyond the islands.
The current issue, issue 5, dubbed Ecocide was guest edited by Leniqueca Welcome. The anchor image (shown above) is Sheena Rose’s “The Hurricane” (acrylic on canvas, 2019). PREE 5 also features artwork by Christopher Cozier, Hew Locke, Francesca von Habsburg, Kelley-Ann Lindo, and Zoya Taylor, among others.
