Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀ and Emmanuel Iduma’s Tender Photos, a platform for photography and visual storytelling, is requesting photographers and writers to submit their work.
Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀ first came to continental attention when her manuscript Stay With Me was shortlisted for the Kwani Manuscript Prize, won by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi in 2013. Stay With Me, published four years later, won a raft of awards including the 9mobile Prize for Literature 2017, the Future Awards Africa Prize for Art & Culture 2017, and was shortlisted for the Wellcome Book Prize 2018, and the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction 2017; a French translation won Prix Les Afriques 2020. Her 2023 novel A Spell of Good Things was shortlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize 2024 and the Booker Prize 2023. Writer and art critic Emmanuel Iduma, who won the Windham-Campbell Prize 2023, is the author of A Stranger’s Pose and Farad.
Adébáyọ̀ and Iduma’s Tender Photos is a digital platform for African photography and visual storytelling aimed at contributing to nuanced and layered perceptions of the continent by publishing narratives about the people, places, and events pictured in photographs, while promoting the work of visual storytellers and photographers.

The team has launched a call for photographers and writers based on the African continent to participate in a new commissioning program that supports the creation of collaborative projects rooted in local contexts. Selected participants will receive a commissioning fee, editorial support, and international exposure.
The deadline is July 15, 2025. All details here. Good luck.
