Billy Kahora’s “The Cape Cod Bicycle War” for Africa Writes Bristol debut.

Billy Kahora’s long-awaited short story collection The Cape Cod Bicycle War And Other Stories makes its official world debut at Africa Writes Bristol on June 28, 2019.

Billy Kahora is familiar with many followers of the African literary space having worked for nearly a decade for Kenya’s leading literary publisher Kwani Trust, editing seven issues of the Kwani? Journal. His short fiction and creative non-fiction have appeared in Chimurenga, McSweeney’s, Granta Online, Internazionale, and Vanity Fair. He has written a non-fiction novella titled The True Story Of David Munyakei, the screenplay for Soul Boy and co-wrote Nairobi Half Life which won at the Kalasha awards Kenya’s leading film awards. He was shortlisted for the Caine Prize for African Writing first in 2012 for The Gorilla’s Apprentice and then in 2014 for Urban Zoning.

The Nairobian currently a lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Bristol is pursuing a PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Manchester. He will introduce the UK audience to his debut short story collection The Cape Cod Bicycle War And Other Stories at an event at Africa Writes Bristol in conversation with publisher Ellah Wakatama Allfrey.

The book is described by Namwali Serpell as ‘a wondrous collection’ which immerses us in ‘a millennial Kenya we’ve never seen in fiction before.’ It brings together eleven short stories that have already received critical acclaim, including The Gorilla’s Apprentice alongside previously unpublished stories set across Kenya, South Africa and the US.
