Blackbird Books new residency seeks young black womxn writers.

Blackbird Books are seeking out young African womxn who are starting their careers as writers for a new writer’s residency in Pretoria, South Africa.

Blackbird Books, an imprint of Jacana Media, headed by Thabiso Mahlape, provides a platform and a publishing home to both new voices and the existing generation of black writers. Since they were set up in 2015, they have published, among others, Lerato Mogoathle’s Vagabond, Esinako Ndabeni and Sihle Mthembu’s Born To Kwaito, Bonang Matheba’s From A to B, Injangolet S. Ogwang’s An Image in a Mirror, and Panashe Chigumadzi’s Sweet Medicine. Not bad for a four year old imprint.

Blackbird Books in conjunction with Casa Lorde and Eunice Ngogodo Own Voices Initiative have set up a writer’s residency for young African womxn who are starting their careers as writers. The initiative is aimed at young black womxn from any African country who are starting their careers as writers and are between 18 and 40 years old. The residency is open to writers of all literary genres: novel, poetry, essay, storytelling, narration, theatre, etc.

The residency for four weeks does not include transport costs to Pretoria, but it does include R5,000 (five thousand) for basic expenses during your stay.
