The Prêmio Jabuti 2024 finalists, a leading Brazilian prize, were announced in Sao Paolo on Thursday, October 24, 2024.
The Prêmio Jabuti (the “Tortoise Prize”) is a literary award given out by the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) conceived by then chairman Edgard Cavalheiro in 1959. Accolades are handed out to authors, editors, illustrators, graphics, and booksellers who stand out each year.
The categories include Literature, Cover, Illustration, Editor of the Year, Chart of the Year, Bookseller of the Year and Literary Personality, Adaptation, Graphic Design and Translation as well as Romance, Tales and Chronicles, Poetry, Children’s, Youth, Reportage and Biography.
The finalists for 2024 were announced with the following writers of African descent in the running;
Fiction
- Goela seca, Jô Freitas, Obra Independente
Comics
- Jeremias: estrela, Jefferson Costa, Rafael Calça, Panini Comics
Children
- Neguinha, sim!, Renato Gama, Companhia das Letrinhas
Literary Novel
- Salvar o fogo, Itamar Vieira Junior, Todavia
- Mata doce, Luciany Aparecida, lfaguara
The awards ceremony will take place on November 19th at the Ibirapuera Auditorium in São Paulo.
