Conceição Evaristo wins Brazil’s Prêmio Juca Pato 2023

Conceição Evaristo’s Canção de ninar para garotão was declared the winner of Brazil’s Prêmio Juca Pato 2023 on Saturday, September 16, 2023.

The Prêmio Juca Pato (Juca Pato Prize) Intellectual of the Year is given to the personality who, having published a book in Brazil in the previous year, has stood out, through his work as a whole, in any area of ​​knowledge and contributed to the development and prestige of the country, in defense of democratic values ​​and Republicans. The annual award first handed out in 1963 has been given to some of the Southern American country’s leading literary names.

The winner for 2023 was named to be to Conceição Evaristo’s Canção de ninar para garotão (English: Lullaby for Big Boy) published in 2022 by Pallas Editora, in which she narrates the contradictions and complexities of black masculinity and their effects on black women. Other finalists this year were writer Maria Vilani, journalist and writer Marilene Felinto, musician and writer Martinho da Vila, and writer Pedro Bandeira.

Evaristo who became the first Black woman winner of the award gave the following address after the announcement;

The award will be awarded during the Itabira International Literary Festival ( Flitabira ) to be held between October 31 and November 5, in the city of Minas Gerais.
