David Diop, Akwaeke Emezi on Dublin Literary Award 2022 shortlist

David Diop and Akwaeke Emezi are on the shortlist for the Dublin International Literary Award 2022 has been announced today, March 22, 2022.  

The Dublin International Literary Award is awarded annually for a novel written in English or translated into English. The prize worth €100,000, sponsored by the Dublin City Council, Ireland, is the richest prize for one work in or translated into English. African writers like Scholastique Mukasonga, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Mahi Binebine, Aminatta Forna and Noviolet Bulawayo, Mia Couto, Chinelo Okparanta , and Yewande Omotoso have been in the running in the past. The prize went to Angolan author José Eduardo Agualusa for his novel A General Theory of Oblivion in 2017.

The international panel of judges who will select the shortlist and winner, features Dubliner Sinéad Moriarty, a writer and books ambassador for Eason’s Must Reads book club; Alvin Pang, from Singapore, is a poet, writer, editor, anthologist, translator, and researcher; Cork-born, Clíona Ní Ríordáin lives in Paris and is a Professor of English at Université de la Sorbonne Nouvelle; Professor Emmanuel Dandaura is a creative writer, literary critic, festival curator, scholar, and multiple award-winning playwright based in Abuja, Nigeria and Victoria White, a graduate with an MLitt in English Literature of Trinity College Dublin, who has worked as a writer and journalist with the Irish Times and the Irish Examiner. The non-voting Chairperson is Professor Chris Morash, the Seamus Heaney Professor of Irish Writing at Trinity College Dublin.

The longlist for 2022 was announced on January 31 before the shortlist, which includes two writers of African descent, was revealed today. They are;

  • At Night all Blood is Black, David Diop, Pushkin Press
  • The Death of Vivek Oji, Akwaeke Emezi, Faber & Faber

The winner will be announced by Lord Mayor of Dublin, Alison Gilliland, on May 19, 2022, as part of the opening day of International Literature Festival Dublin, which is also funded by Dublin City Council.
