The literature program of the Daystar University where students learn the business of writing called The Creatives Academy ended on Saturday after 12 weeks.
It was one of the most innovative programs for students of literature in recent times in Kenya. Students were offered an opportunity to interact with professionals in writing thus learn how the business really works for twelve weeks.
They got to interact with some of the better-known people in writing in Kenya with names like Kinyanjui Kombani, Yvonne Odhiambo Awuor, Binyavanga Wainaina, Ng’ang’a Mbugua, John Sibi-Okumu, Peter Crompton and the rest of them.
It wasn’t just the writing of books that was in focus. They were given tips by people like Terry-Anne Chebet on branding and how important it was to sell yourself in the market. They were told about other options as writers like script writing (Martin Munyua) and websites (David Mugo) and many more.
Saturday morning was the last of the talks with Dr Marisella Ouma of the Kenya Copyright Board leading the way to talk about the importance of copyright in your work as a creative.
Also coming through were some of the folks who had been facilitating like Martin Munyua, Ng’ang’a Mbugua, Peter Crompton, and John Sibi-Okumu. They all gave their appreciation for the facilitators of the program led by Daystar Uni’s Dr Wandia Njoya and Kinyanjui Kombani.
The next leg of the Creatives Academy at the Daystar University will happen in January 2015.
