EC Osondu has been announced as the newest contributing editor to respected US literary magazine AGNI.
AGNI is an American literary magazine that publishes poetry, fiction, essays, reviews, interviews, and artwork twice a year in print and biweekly online. The magazine was born in Antioch College in the United States and moved a bit before its current home where it is published by Boston University. Many prominent writers have had their work featured in AGNI like including Jhumpa Lahiri, Sven Birkerts, Joyce Carol Oates, Derek Walcott, and Russell Banks.
One of those who have had their work featured is E.C. Osondu. Readers of this blog will remember him as one of the judges of the Koffi Addo Writivism Prize for Creative Non Fiction 2017 which will be running later in the year. He isn’t just about judging prizes our EC. He emerged on the African literary scene when he won the Caine Prize for African writing in 2009 for his story Waiting. Since then he has written published one story collection, Voice of America, and an acclaimed debut novel, This House Is Not for Sale.
Osondu’s first appeared in the AGNI in 2006 with his story A Letter from Home which was named one of the Top Ten Online Stories of 2006 by storySouth. His other AGNI story Jimmy Carter’s Eyes was a finalist for the Caine Prize.
It seems that the Nigerian will be coming back this time not as a contributing writer but as a contributing editor. It won’t be the first time he will be doing this. In 2010, E. C. coedited, with William Pierce, the AGNI Portfolio of African Fiction.
So there you have it. Another person to send your work to with a familiar name. One who will look at it and give you an opinion on its merits but you will be pissed because he didn’t give him a through pass and publish it because it wasn’t good enough. I really don’t envy the life of the editor.
