Femrite Literary Week for Kampala in July #FemlitweekFemrite Literary Week, a series of events with a literary focus, will be hosted in Kampala, Uganda from July 24-28, 2017.

The Uganda Women Writers’ Association universally known as Femrite is an organisation that promotes Ugandan creative women writers through training and publishing. Formed in May 1996 by Mary Karoro Okurut and many others, some of the biggest names in Ugandan literature are members of this collective of writers based in Kampala. The organisation has published dozens of novels, short stories, poetry and children’s books since its formation.

Femrite announced that they will be hosting a series of events in their Femlitweek in Kampala next week. Away from the many activities like readings and performances there will be a life writing workshop for those who had applied earlier. Here are the activities in the schedule;

Monday July 24

Readers Writers Club Special

The events kick off with a Readers Writers Club Special at their offices on Kira Road yesterday from 5-7pm.

Tuesday July 25

Reading: Miria Matembe

Miria Matembe

The action includes a reading by Miria Matembe whose is a former member of the Pan-African Parliament from Uganda. Her books are Gender, Politics and Constitution Making in Uganda (2002) and Woman in the Eyes of God: Reclaiming a Lost Identity (2009).

Wednesday July 26

Public dialogue: The Forgotten Pioneers: Three East African Asian Women’s Memoirs

There will be a public dialogue on the topic, The Forgotten Pioneers: Three East African Asian Women’s Memoirs. The dialogue will feature Dr Felicity Hand and Sr Dr Frances Nakiwala.

Thursday July 27

Book launch: Femrite poetry anthology, Writivism Short Story Anthology

It will be for some a highlight as the launch of two publications happens. This is both the Writivism Short Story anthology Sundown and the Femrite Poetry anthology Wondering and Wandering of Hearts. The launches will be accompanied by a bonfire and performances with the guest artist being Dr Esther Pujolràs Noguer.

Friday July 28

Book Launch: Zura Maids

There will be a book launch of Zura Maids by Eunice Apio. The guest honour at the event will be speaker of the Ugandan parliament Rebecca Kadaga.
