Gaber Asfour was announced the Nile Prize for Literature 2018 winner on June 24, 2019.
Egypt’s Nile Award is granted annually to people in the fields of literature, arts and social sciences as well as “most creative Arab personality” which was added to the categories last year. Each winner gets EGP 500,000 and a gold medal. One of the previous winners has been poet Farouk Shousha in 2016.
The Nile Awards was voted on by the Egyptian Members of the Supreme Council for Culture on Sunday then the announcement was made on June 24. The Nile Award in Literature was given to critic and former Minister of Culture Gaber Asfour. Other winners in this year’s awards were Ahmed Nawwar in the arts, Moufid Shehab in Social Sciences, and Rasem Badran was Most Creative Arab personality.
Gaber Asfour is the author of An Al-Thakafa Wal Horreyya (On Culture and Freedom), In Defence of Enlightenment and Times of the Novel. The well-known critic and professor of Arabic Literature at Cairo University served as Egypt’s Minister of Culture twice, in 2011 and in 2014
