Gaborone Book Festival 2021 to kick off on September 16. #AreBaleng

The Gaborone Book Festival 2021, which happens annually in Botswana’s capital, runs from September 16-18, 2021. The announcement was made on August 26.

The Gaborone Book Festival, founded by Keikantse Phele and Kenanao Phele, first ran in the Southern African country of Botswana in 2018. The event, which also run in 2019 and 2020, was aimed at fostering a love for reading among Batswana and residents of Botswana. It has hosted many writers and poets from Botswana and across the continent. They include TJ Dema, Lola Shoneyin, Pumla Dineo Gqola, Niq Mhlongo, Helon Habila, Zukiswa Wanner, Lauri Kubuitsile, Michael Dingake, Andrew Sesinyi, Ednah Rosen, Onica Lenkutwane, Bakang Baloi, Nelson Letswene, Abigail Mwikisa, Odafe Atogun, Lerato Mogoatlhe, PJ Mofokeng and Siya Khumalo.

The first communication on this year’s edition of the festival was shared on their twitter account yesterday. It was simply an image with the festival name with the dates and the words #GBF21 and #AreBaleng. The former is a reference to the hashtag they will be using during the festival while “Are Baleng” refers to “let’s read” is seSotho and seTswana.

The account also shared that this year as opposed to previous editions would be completely virtual. There is no information on the featured writers and poets for 2021 yet.
