Gofundme: How to support Harriet Anena’s Columbia University dreams.

Harriet Anena has an opportunity to attend Columbia University’s MFA. Here’s how you can make her dream come true.

Harriet Anena is one of the leading names in the new wave of writing coming out of the continent. The poet and prose writer has been getting noticed in the last few years with her short story, Dancing with Ma being shortlisted for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize in 2018. In 2017 and 2018, her stories Waiting and The Satans Inside my Jimmy were longlisted for the Short Story Day Africa Prize. Her debut poetry collection A Nation in Labour being a joint winner of the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa, 2018.

The Kampala based writer this March got a rare opportunity to attend the Columbia University, New York City, USA where she will attend an MFA in Creative Writing. Doing this course would go a long way to improving the writer poet’s craft while also ensuring that her work is seen by new audiences.

The only downside for her is that she didn’t get a scholarship so she would need to raise the whole US$100,000 money required for her tuition and living expenses. While Anena has done her best, it is quite a large sum to raise for the East African.

To help her get to her dream of attending one of the best schools, we ask that you support our friend’s dream by contributing to the GoFundMe set up. You can join those who have given their support like Mukoma Wa Ngugi and Tsitsi Dangarembga.

Update: Harriet Anena has attended and graduated from Columbia University.
