Isaac Kilibwa is the winner of the Kikwetu Flash Fiction Contest 2023; the announcement was made on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
Kikwetu is an online literary journal that publishes both new and established writers from East Africa and beyond in English and Swahili founded in 2015. In 2023, the journal unveiled a new contest for writers to send out their best flash fiction which was one by Moses Abukutsa.
The longlists for 2023 were revealed on March 25 before the finalists which were made public on the same day as the winner. The finalists who will be published in issue 9 are;
- Akara, Chinaza James-Ibe
- OHÀHÀ’NYI, Abdulrahaman Adeiza Jimoh
- Cul-de-sac, Isaac Kilibwa
- A Basket Full of Spilled Water, Chiemeziem Everest Udochukwu
- Dead Skin, Florence Onyango
From these, the winner was declared to be Cul-de-sac by Isaac Kilibwa who receives the cash prize of $150. Kilibwa is a Kenyan poet and teacher whose poems have appeared in Brittle Paper’s 2023 Festive Anthology Vol. 2, Mystery Publishers’ 2023 Strange Water anthology, Hawakal’s 2023 Wives anthology, and Mukana Press’ much-acclaimed 2022 Old Love Skin anthology.
