Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi is a Commonwealth Short Story Prize 2019 judge. The Ugandan award winning novelist and short story writer will be selecting the winner from the Africa region.
We mentioned in September that the Commonwealth Short Story Prize 2019 made a call out for stories. Entrants to this prize would be eligible to winning a share of the £15,000 prize money on offer with the overall winner getting £5,000 and regional winners receiving £2,500. Those who would win on the continent would join a roll of honour including Jekwu Anyaegbuna (2012), Julian Jackson (2013), Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi (2014), Lesley Nneka Arimah (2015), Faraaz Mahomed (2016), Akwaeke Emezi (2017), and Efua Traoré (2018).
The team organising the competition announced the judges for the prize for next year on October 9 and the judge for Africa is Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi. Makumbi is a Ugandan novelist and short story writer whose first novel, Kintu was longlisted for the Etisalat Prize in 2014. Her short story Let’s Tell This Story Properly won the Commonwealth Short Story Prize 2014. Earlier this year, she was awarded the Windham-Campbell Prize for Fiction 2018 to support her writing.
