João Melo’s poetry collection Exercícios e Linguagens was named a Premio Correntes de Escritas 2024 finalist on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.
Correntes d’Escritas (English: Writing Currents) is an annual meeting of writers of Iberian expression that happens in Póvoa do Varzim in northern Portugal in February. The writers come from countries where Portuguese and Spanish are spoken. The first meeting occurred in February 2000, the year that marked the centenary of the death of legendary Portuguese writer Eça de Queirós, born in the city. Over 1,000 authors have attended the event promoted by the city government that has attracted 200,000 spectators with over 500 books launched.
During this event, Premio Correntes de Escritas (English: Writing Currents Award) has been awarded for new works of prose or poetry since 2004. The prize worth 25,000 euros also includes a replica of the Póvoa speedboat, a symbol of the city and the sea among the different peoples.
The eleven finalists for the current edition including Angolan poet and writer João Melo, poetry collection Exercícios e Linguagens making the list were announced on Wednesday. Exercícios e Linguagens (English: Exercises and Languages) is a collection of poems produced using different languages, styles, and forms – classical, modern, and experimental was published in Portugal in 2023 by Caminho.
The winner will be announced at the festival from February 15 – 22, 2025.
