Joe Frazier kicks off Ghana Voices Series 2015

The Ghana Voices Series is a monthly event where authors read their work to an audience that was started in 2010 at the Niagara Plus Hotel in Osu in Accra. That first event in June of that year featured Martin Egblewogbe reading from his collection of short stories, Mr Happy and the Hammer of God. The event is the brainchild of the good people at the Writers Project of Ghana.

Since then the series has featured many authors including Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond, Elizabeth-Irene Baitie, Mariska Taylor-Darko, Nana Awere Damoah, Farida Bedwei, Papa Kobina Ulzen, Kofi Akpabli, Manu Herbstein, Fiona Leonard, Mamle Kabu, Kuukua Dzigbordi Yomekpe, Camynta Baezie, Elizabeth-Irene Baitie, and Gheysika Adombire Agambila. Also featuring were Ama Ata Aidoo, Kofi Akpabli, Kojo Laing, Taiye Selasi, Kwami Anyidoho, Ruby Goka, Chuma Nwokolo, Mamle Wolo, Alex Agyei-Agyiri, Martin Egblewogbe, Boakyewaa Glover, Mawuli Adjei, Nana Malone, Nii Ayikwei Parkes, Sefi Atta, Jojo Cobbinah, Malaka Grant, Empi Baryeh, Elizabeth-Irene Baitie, Ivor Agyeman-Duah July Nana Malone, Kofi Bentum Quantson, Benjamin Kwakye and Samuel Duh.

As you can see, this series is probably the most consistent one on the continent with authors from all over the West African region presenting their work.

The first in the series for 2015 happened at its new venue at the Goethe Institute in Accra last Wednesday. The author on show was Joe Frazier (born Silva Kwabla Lumor) whose first novel, Blame not the Darkness was published in 2011. This was followed by Akora in 2013 and his third novel, The Sissain Bridge is currently in press.

Frazier also writes My Blog, a weekly column for the Daily Graphic, and has over 400 articles and opinion pieces in print.

He read from his first book and this was followed by a short discussion.

The next author in the series is set to be South African poet Phillippa Yaa de Villiers.
