Writing Africa: Archiving African and Black Literature

Kachifo is seeking your manuscripts: your deadline is March 30

Nigerian publisher Kachifo has made an open call out for manuscripts. The deadline for you the potential African literary hero is March 30, 2018.

Kachifo Limited started with the Farafina Magazine in 2002 as a platform for African writers to present their own ideas to the rest of the world. The magazine was an attempt to insert the African viewpoint into the global discourse. The magazine went from the original online version to print in 2005, with seventeen editions published before it was rested in 2009.

Kachifo’s literary imprint, Farafina, took off in 2004 with Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus and soon became the home of several other leading African authors. Alongside the other members of the Kachifo publishing umbrella, they have gone onto to publish authors like Tendai Huchu, Yejide Kilanko, Ben Okri, Nnedi Okorafor, Olusegun Obasanjo, Yewande Omotoso, Chude Jideonwo and Ngugi wa Thiong’o. The current star in the Farafina stable has to be Lesley Nneka Arimah with her 9mobile prize shortlisted debut What it Means When a Man Falls Down From the Sky.

Kachifo is looking for your manuscript as they search for the next generation of African literary stars. So if you think that you have what it takes to join the above writers this is your opportunity to show what you have got.

There are some basic rules for you to become the next big literary star of course. You start by sending an email to submissions@kachifo.com, including a strong excerpt of about three chapters or 10,000 words saved in Microsoft Word, a one-page synopsis of the work, and a short author bio. (Note that a synopsis is not the same as a blurb or a teaser. A synopsis should contain ‘spoilers’, and should give a summary of the entire story, including and especially how it ends.) You need to click here to get the full details.

Your deadline is March 30, 2018.
