Kalemba Short Story Prize 2023 finalists announced.

The finalists for Kalemba Short Story Prize 2023 were announced in Lusaka, Zambia on Wednesday, August 16, 2023.

The Kalemba Short Story Prize is awarded annually to the best work of original and unpublished short fiction written in English by a Zambian administered and funded by Ukusefya Words. Previous winners have been Mali Kambandu (2018), Mubanga Kalimamukwento (2019), and Rhodasi Mwale (2020)

The jury for 2023 comprises Mbozi Haimbe, Lionel Ntasano, Austin Kaluba, and Chobela Ndilila. The longlist was announced on Saturday, April 29 and writers were invited to participate in a masterclass delivered by an expert in fiction and short-story writing. The shortlist was then made public on July 27.

The finalists announced on Wednesday have written the following stories;

  • Up the Eucalyptus Tree, Mikha Mweetwa
  • Don’t forget to Remember, Birbal Boniface Musoba
  • The Guest, Glyn Mwiya
  • No Strings Attached, Mukandi Siyame
  • Dark Motives, Sylvia Mbewe
  • Animals, Mutale Chisulo

The top three will be announced later in the month. The winner will receive USD1500, and the two run-ups USD500 each.
