The shortlist for Kalemba Short Story Prize 2023 was announced in Lusaka, Zambia earlier today, July 27, 2023.
The Kalemba Short Story Prize is awarded annually to the best work of original and unpublished short fiction written in English by a Zambian administered and funded by Ukusefya Words. Previous winners have been Mali Kambandu (2018), Mubanga Kalimamukwento (2019), and Rhodasi Mwale (2020)
The jury for 2023 comprises Mbozi Haimbe, Lionel Ntasano, Austin Kaluba, and Chobela Ndilila. The longlist was announced on Saturday, April 29 and writers were invited to participate in a masterclass delivered by an expert in fiction and short-story writing.
The shortlist announced today has the following stories;
- Up the Eucalyptus Tree, Mikha Mweetwa
- Don’t forget to Remember, Birbal Boniface Musoba
- The Guest, Glyn Mwiya
- Squelching noises, Clarence Chongo
- The Final Act, Nduluma Mwaba
- The Family Terminator, Neddy Chimpati
- A Union of Inconvenience, Jolezya Adeyemo
- No Strings Attached, Mukandi Siyame
- Father Forgive me for I have Sineth, Ndanji Nyirenda
- Dark Motives, Sylvia Mbewe
- Animals, Mutale Chisulo
- The Blues, Fisk Nyirongo
- A Chance at Life, Natasha Mwenda
- The Papa, the Patient and the Physician, Katenekwa Njekwa
The top six will be published a week before the winner is announced at a date in August; they will receive USD1500, and the two run-ups USD500 each.
