Writing Africa: Archiving African and Black Literature

Kenya Readathon 2024

Kenyan Readathon 2024 event for September 14

The official Kenyan Readathon 2024 event will be hosted at the McMillan Memorial Library, Nairobi on Saturday, September 14, 2024.

In 2020, literary activist Lexa Lubanga unveiled the “Kenya Readathon” initiative to celebrate writing from the East African nation. It was a virtual series to encourage readers to promote Kenyan authors with their work as well as support local bookstores. Organisers encouraged lovers of Kenyan writing to share their experiences of the work on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. The initiative started hosting physical meetings in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

For 2024, organisers took a different approach to ensure that the celebration of Kenyan letters wasn’t confined to just one month. Their approach was to have months dedicated to different decades of writing by Kenyan writers thus;

  • April – 1960s
  • May – 1970s
  • June – 1980s
  • July – 1990s
  • August – 2000s
  • September – Present

The highlight for the series is a physical event which will be hosted at the McMillan Memorial Library, Nairobi on Saturday.

“Join us on the 14th of September to share in the excitement of our literary milestones! We are hosting a special event to celebrate the amazing contributors to Kenyan literature. It’s going to be a great gathering, and it is free for everyone! Looking forward to seeing you there!” said Lexa Lubanga of the forthcoming event.

If you are in Nairobi, please make your way to the venue for an event running from 11 am – 5 pm.
