Lauren Beukes and Mbali Vilakazi were the big winners at this Friday’s Mbokodo Awards 2015 hosted at the Johannesburg City Hall.

The Mbokodo awards are given to South African women who have done big things in the South African arts. The categories are quite a few and include Creative Writing, poetry, promotion of language and story telling, creative photography, visual arts, architecture, creative design, fashion design… basically all the arms of the creative industries in South Africa.

This blog focuses on literature stuff to you know that the biggest winners in our books were in the creative writing and poetry category. The creative writing nod went to Lauren Beukes the author of Zoo City, Moxyland, The Shining Girls and Broken Monsters. She has other things going for her work wise but we’ll leave this here for now.

Mbali Vilakazi won the poetry category has worked as a curator for the Africa Centre’™s Badilisha Poetry Radio.

P.S. It’s a lit blog but my Kenyaness will come out every once in a while. How cool is it that Yvonne Chaka Chaka won in the arts ambassador category. Si we love her here Kenya. Sigh.
