South African author Lauren Beukes has slowly been taking over the “alternative” spaces in writing that many African writers aren’t famous for. Her first book Moxyland was a thriller about technological progress and the freedoms it removes. Zoo City followed soon and this one is about a woman who finds things using her intuition. That book won the 2011 Arthur C Clarke Award; the biggest award in writing for Science fiction in English.
Last year she came out with The Shining Girls where she took a different route with a book not based in Africa. This new book is a thriller based in Chicago, USA where the bad guy is a time-travelling serial killer. This book is currently in the running for the Strand Prize for Fiction.
As she gets more accolades for her past work her next masterpiece Broken Monsters is already in the works and will be available on 31 July 2014. Just like her previous book this one sees a criminal mastermind who creates violent tableaus in abandoned Detroit warehouses in Lauren Beukes’s new genre-bending novel of suspense.
