September was a very activity-filled month of the year with festivals galore from the West with Kaduna Book and Arts Festival 2019 and the East with the Kistrech International Poetry Festival 2019, African Writers Conference 2019, Macondo Literary Festival 2019, and the Nairobi International Book Fair 2019. In Southern Africa, there was the Polokwane Literary Fair 2019, Open Book Festival 2019, the Namibian Book Fair 2019, South African Book Fair 2019 and the Gaborone Book Fair 2019.

The many literary festivals continue rolling out in October with events across the continent in Nigeria, Ghana, Algeria, and South Africa. Here are some events to look forward to this month;

  • Nkabom Literary Art Festival 2019 – Lome, Togo. October 2-4

The Nkabom Literary Art Festival 2019 which happened in Accra, Ghana in September will be rolling into Lome, Togo on October 2. Guests can expect readings, panels, film screenings and the other things you expect at a literary festival until October 4, 2019.

  • Northern Cape Writers Festival 2019 – Kimberley, South Africa. October 9-12.

The Northern Cape Writers Festival has been running in Kimberley, South Africa since 2009. This year it kicks off with the annual Sol Plaatje Lecture by Prof Barney Pityana followed by other events. One of these is an art exhibition at the William Humphreys Gallery with the work of artists from South Africa and the United States.

  • Pa Gya! A literary Festival 2019 – Accra, Ghana. October 10-20

A literary Festival 2019, writers, publisher, critics, academics, performers, and musicians together with an enthusiastic audience will enjoy days of workshops, readings, book launches, performances, talks, panel discussions, and more. Audiences can interact with among others, Ayesha Harruna Attah, Bisi Adjapon, Ato Quayson, Oyinkan Braithwaite, Empi Baryeh, Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah, Richard Ali, OluTimehin Adegbeye, Sabata-mpho Mokae, Phillippa Yaa de Villiers, Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond, and TJ Benson.

  • Poetry Africa International Festival 2019 – Durban, South Africa. October 16-20.
Poetry Africa 2019

Poetry Africa, organised by the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts, is an international poetry festival held annually in Durban, South Africa. Those who attend the festival this year get to interact with artists like Nadra Mabrouk, Efe Paul Azino, Titilope Sonuga, Tobi Abiodun, Bash’ Amuneni, Luleka Mhlanzi, Busiswe Mahlangu, Shashi Simelane, and South African poet laureate Mongane Wally Serote.

  • Ake Arts & Books Festival 2019 – Lagos, Nigeria. October 24-27.
Ake Festival 2019

The Aké Arts and Book Festival is an annual literary, cultural and arts event that was founded in 2013 by the Nigerian writer Lola Shoneyin. The festival running in Lagos, Nigeria offers book launches and readings, panels, music, poetry, film screenings, and much more. Those who go to the Alliance Francaise can expect to interact with artists like Tsitsi Dangarembga, Bassey Ikpi, Ayobami Adebayo, Bernardine Evaristo, Chika Unigwe, Dami Ajayi, Fred Khumalo, Helon Habila, Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi, Leila Aboulela, Kagiso Lesego Molope, Logan February, Leye Adenle, Mona Eltahawy, Mohale Mashigo, Nnedi Okorafor, Sulaiman Addonia, Thando Mgqolozana, Toni Kan, Jose Eduardo Agualusa, and Zukiswa Wanner.

Accra International Book Festival 2019

The Accra International Book Festival 2019 will have over 25 authors, along with illustrators, musicians and other artists would come to Accra to take part in the Book Festival in October 2019. Some of those audiences will interact with will be Bisi Adjapon, Lerato Mogoatlhe, Lade Wosornu, Patrick Nketiah, Yusuf Ahmad Bello, Mary Bushel, Evans Owusu Issi, and many more.

  • International Book Fair of Algiers (Salon International Du Livre d’Alger) – Algiers, Algeria. October 30 – November 9.

This Salon International Du Livre d’Alger 2019 is one of the biggest on the continent with guests in the hundreds of thousands of guests attending to stands in their hundreds. The will be book readings and launches, poetry performances, events for children, and much more on offer.

  • Lagos International Poetry Festival 2019 – Lagos, Nigeria. October 31- November 4.
Lagos International Poetry Festival 2019

The Lagos International Poetry Festival, founded by Efe Paul Azino, brings over fifty writers, poets and thinkers from over ten countries, and offers a multi-layered experience with something for everyone, from readings and performances, to conversations, workshops, book launches, film screenings, music, and exhibitions.
