Literary Magazines: Jalada, Johannesburg Review of Books, Ipikai, Weganda

New editions of Jalada, Johannesburg Review of Books, Ipikai, and Weganda are available for your reading pleasure.

Jalada

Jalada Africa is a pan-African writers’ collective, with the aim of publishing literature by African authors regularly founded in 2014.

Their latest issue is a translations project lead by Wanjeri Gakuru and artwork is by Marziya Mohammedali. It follows on their wildly successful translation project on one piece of writing by Ngugi Wa Thiong’o. This second in the series has translations of Wole Soyinka’s poem in English Mandela Comes to Leah. There are currently 48 languages from more than 20 countries across the globe already translated from Akan to Korean, Belizean Creole, Runyankore, Dutch, Marakwet, Nepali and Shetlandic.

Ipikai: Issue 5

Ipikai, founded by Batsirai Chigama and Fungai Tichawangana is an initiative of the new Zimbabwe Poets Society.

The newest edition of the magazine, the fifth, is edited by Memory Chirere has “possibilities” as its theme inspired by Dambudzo Marechera. Featured poets include Sharon Hofisi, Saberstian Talkmore Sibanda, Pfumo, Tanaka Chidora, Beverley Ann Abrahams, Ngonidzashe Mhizha, Moira Marangwanda-Chipanda, David Chasumba, Andy Kahari, Samantha Rumbidzai Vazhure, Aldreen Takudzwa Munyoro, Obey Victor Chiyangwa, Fadzai Kimberly, and Shelton Chiuswa.

Weganda Review

The Weganda Review is a literary journal produced in Uganda as a project of the cultural nonprofit Weganda Foundation. The platform founded by Rodney Muhumuza in 2023 features writers, researchers, academics, artists, and others publishing short fiction, poetry, art portfolios, photography, diaries, reviews, and, especially, essays as cultural criticism.

The second edition has Rodney Muhumuza (editor) alongside Ssebo Lule (poetry editor), Edgar R. Batte and Farouq ssebaggala as art directors. It has contributions from Odoki Jimmy Acellam, Charles Onyango-Obbo, Rodney Muhumuza, Marlon Agaba, Barbara Barungi, Rachael Mwine, Bridget Ankunda, Destiny Gladys Chaiga, Jackee Budesta Batanda, Lillian Awori, Kaddu Wasswa, Sanaa Gateja, Letaru Dralega, and Joseph Mugume.

Johannesburg Review of Books

The Johannesburg Review of Books is an independent literary review that publishes reviews, essays, poetry, photographs, and short fiction from South Africa, Africa, and beyond.
