Lowle, the newest journal on the African literary scene, has unveiled the cover for its inaugural edition. Here’s how you can help them.
In January, we spoke about a new literary journal set to dazzle the African literary community called Lolwe. The new project, whose name comes from “Nam Lolwe” a local name for Lake Victoria, started off with exclusive new work from Linda Musita, Susie Anne, Deshawn McKinney, and others. They also made a call out for submissions for their inaugural issue, to be edited by JK Anowe, Itiola Jones, and Moso Sematlane, for work that was bold, different, and blurred or pushed boundaries.
The journal has today unveiled the cover for its publication on its social media channels. The image used is a stunning portrait of a man in a boat in what we can only assume is at the aforementioned Lake Victoria taken by Edwin Maina of UrbanPitchaz.
The publication is moving in an interesting direction where journals on the continent are concerned as it has committed to paying its contributors for their work.
“Lolwe is making a commitment to offer remuneration to contributors – however modest – for work that is accepted and published. This is a dream that Lolwe hopes to make a reality.
However, this commitment is difficult as the magazine currently has no funding or any financial backing. So far, the magazine has relied on the Editor’s own contributions and the generosity of a few friends and family. That means the magazine has been unable to pay for most of the pieces published so far. However, for the forthcoming inaugural issue, we would like to keep the promise and pay the contributors. Help keep Lolwe’s dream alive by sending a donation via PayPal to make sure that your favourite story, poem, essay or photograph is paid for and the artist is happy. Wouldn’t it be nice for your favourite artist to afford something nice for themselves too? 🙂”
