Lupita Nyong’o to star in the Trevor Noah biopic “Born a Crime”

Lupita Nyong’o will star in the Trevor Noah biopic Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood, portraying the mother of the host of “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah.”

Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood is an autobiographical comedy book written by the South African comedian Trevor Noah. Noah you will know for his comedy specials Daywalker, Crazy Normal, and That’s Racist as well as his gig as the host of US cable show The Daily Show. The book focuses on growing up in post-apartheid South Africa as the son of a white father and black mother who had trouble fitting in.

The book published by Spiegel & Grau in 2016 has won the James Thurber Prize for American Humor and two NAACP Image Awards. The book also made the New York Times Notable Books of 2017 as its writer was announced as one of the 100 Most Influential Africans of 2017 by The New African magazine.

The book is getting the Hollywood treatment as it gets a movie made out of it. The movie has signed on one of the biggest names coming out of the continent to star; Lupita Nyong’o currently riding high on the success of Black Panther where she plays Nakia the love interest of the main protagonist Prince turned Prince T’Challa. The Kenyan actress has also acted in movies like Star Wars and 12 Years A Slave for which she won the best supporting actress.

Nyong’o will be playing the role of Noah’s mother, Patricia, who grew up in a hut with 14 occupants and took her son to three churches every Sunday, a prayer meeting on Tuesday, Bible study on Wednesday, and youth church on Thursday.

In other Lupita Nyong’o news, she will write her debut children’s book “Sulwe” for Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers next January. The picture book is aimed at readers between the ages of 5 and 7. You can read more about that project here.
