The Mabati Cornell Kiswahili Prize for African Literature was founded by Mukoma Wa Ngugi and Lizzy Attree in 2014 to promote writing in African languages and encourage translation from, between, and into African languages.
Alongside the announcements for the winners of the Mabati Cornell Prize this year, a call for submissions for the 2016 edition of the prize was made. The prize organisers seek unpublished manuscripts or books in fiction, poetry, and memoir, or graphic novels published in Kiswahili within the last two years.
If you fall in this category there are many goodies that could come your way should you win including cash, residencies in exciting places, and possibly a chance to meet a famous writer or two. Did I mention that you get published?
If you have a manuscript of more than 50,000 words for fiction or 60 pages for poetry then send it to kiswahiliprize@cornell.edu. Your deadline for submission is 31 March 2016. The shortlist will be announced in July and the winner announced in October 2016.
The Prize is primarily supported by the Mabati Rolling Mills of Kenya (a subsidiary of the Safal Group), The Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs at Cornell University, and the Africana Studies Center at Cornell University.
