Macondo Literary Festival 2023

Macondo Literary Festival 2023 guests unveiled.

The guests for the Macondo Literary Festival 2023 to be hosted in Nairobi, Kenya from September 15 – 17, 2023, have been revealed.

The Macondo Literary Festival is a creation of the Macondo Book Society, founded by author Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor and journalist Anja Bengelstorff. The name comes from “Macondo,” the fictional place where magical things happen in the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude by Colombian Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Márquez. It was aimed at initiating and encouraging the engagement of a wider public with literature and its creators as a means of societal growth. Read our reporting on the festival that has run for two editions, 2019 and 2022, by clicking here.

The 2023 edition is coming with the dates being announced in March. The promise was of a pan-African festival with authors from all parts of the continent: The Arab, English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish writing language zones in conversation across perceived limitations, barriers, and silos. It would all run under the theme “disrupting home.”

Over the weekend, organisers announced some of the guests who would be coming with an exciting lineup from Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Cameroon, South Africa, Togo, Sudan, Angola, Sierra Leone, the UK, Germany, Italy, and Morocco. Those scheduled to walk the stage at the iconic Kenya National Theatre are Aminatta Forna (Sierra Leone/ UK), Leila Aboulela (Sudan/ UK), Hemley Boum (Cameroon), Youssef Fadel (Morocco), Ketty Nivyabandi (Burundi/ Canada), Kalaf Epalanga (Angola/ Germany), Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi (Uganda), Masande Ntshanga (South Africa), Kossi Komla-Ebri (Togo/ Italy) and Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor (Kenya).

We expect more revelations on the program from the team but we encourage that you lock those dates in ladies and gentlemen. And transren. With that lineup, a good time is promised.
