It created in 1926 by ten art critics awaiting the results of deliberation of the jury of the Prix Goncourt. It was named for Théophraste Renaudot, who founded La Gazette (later La Gazette de France), an influential weekly newspaper. Some of its winners have been Michel del Castillo, Édouard Glissant, Michel Butor, Jean Cayrol, Louis Aragon, Louis-Ferdinand Céline, and Marcel Aymé.
The judging panel for 2021 chaired by Georges-Olivier Châteaureynaud includes Christian Giudicelli, Frédéric Beigbeder, Dominique Bona, Patrick Besson, Franz-Olivier Giesbert, Stéphanie Janicot, J.M.G. Le Clézio, Jean-Noël Pancrazi, and Cécile Guilbert.
This jury announced their first selection for this prize in September and it featured Senegalese Mohamed Mbougar Sarr’s novel La Plus Secrète Mémoire Des Hommes (English: The Most Secret Memory of Men) (Philippe Rey). The book has been described as a masterful learning novel, a gripping investigation into the footsteps of a mysterious author led by a young African writer in Paris.
The award ceremony will take place at Drouant on November 3, 2021.
