The Miles Morland Foundation has announced that the Morland Writing Scholarships for African Writers 2018 open on Saturday June 30, 2018.
The Morland Writing Scholarships for African Writers 2018, popularly referred to as the Morland Writing Scholarship, is an opportunity to allow writers to stay with their core business without missing out on their normal living of having to hustle for bills.
Scholars writing fiction receive a grant of £18,000, paid monthly over the course of twelve months. At the discretion of the foundation, Scholars writing non-fiction may receive a grant of up to £27,000, paid over a period of up to eighteen months. This is divided into twelve and given to the recipient and in return they are required to hand in 10,000 words every months until the end of the year. The plan is that by the end of the year one has a novel ready for publication.
Since the scholarship emerged in 2013, it has supported the following writers to work on their manuscripts.
- 2013 – Percy Zvomuya, Tony Mochama and Doreen Baingana.
- 2014 – Simone Haysom, Ahmed Khalifa, Ndinda Kioko, and Yewande Omotoso.
- 2015 – Fatin Abbas, Noo Saro-Wiwa, Akwaeke Emezi, Karen Jennings, and Bolaji Odofin.
- 2016 – Abdul Adan, Ayesha Harruna Attah, and Lidudumalingani Mqombothi.
- 2017 – Nneoma Ike-Njoku, Alemseged Tesfai, Bryony Rheam, Elnathan John, Eloghosa Osunde, and Fatima Kola.
