Nakuru Writers Meet

Nakuru Writers Meet hosts writers from Nakuru county

Many writers from Nakuru County attended the Nakuru Writers Meet at the Kenya National Library Services in Nakuru on Saturday, March 12, 2022.

In 2022, we here at James Murua Literary started the Kenya Writes Project to shine a light on the writers from across Kenya. Our friends at the Goethe-Institut in Nairobi accepted to be our partners for this project to introduce new Kenyan writers to the wider African literary community.

The first two months of the year saw us go into the towns of Mombasa and Kisumu and meet with individual writers and conduct interviews. Those interviews have started to feature on our podcast with the most recent being Fatma Shafii, a writer from Mombasa. More interviews will be forthcoming in the following weeks and months.

For March, we approached the Purity Kavuri Mutuku-led Kenya National Library Services (KNLS) Nakuru, to host writers in one event which would simplify the process of getting writers and they accepted. Our friends at Worldreader liked the idea so much that they joined us by offering an e-reader to one of the writers who attended.

The event called the “Nakuru Writers Meet” had about a dozen writers of all ages from the more experienced to learners in the Kenyan school system. Those who attended got to chat with people many of them didn’t know were from their county with folks like Kaka Frank, Kyelanzi Matei, Amal Mohamed, Sospeter, Ash Jay, Thank God “TG” Wambura, Moraa Muiruri, and many others. Also in attendance was a representative of Nuria Book store.

They got to share in challenges and opportunities in their profession in that part of the country. From this event, they decided to form a new community to advocate for their work as a group.
