There was a reading that featured writers, including Ndinda Kioko, at the Haenalem Café, Nairobi on November 9, 2019. The writer is currently a Macdowell fellow in the USA.
On Saturday, November 9, a new event, a read, eat and chill affair that saw many of the newer names in the Nairobi writing scene share some of their work was hosted at the Haenalem Café in Nairobi. There were readings and performances of prose and poetry by several writers including Aisha aka @BintiM, Muraya Ogutu, and several others.
The biggest draw that evening was award-winning writer Ndinda Kioko whose short fiction has appeared in several literary magazines and anthologies. Kioko is a winner of the Logsdon Fiction Award, the Wasafiri New Writing Prize fiction award and was listed in the Africa39 Project, a selection of 39 writers under the age of 40 from Africa. The writer who has been on holiday from the US read excerpts of work she has already published and some which we could expect. Below are some of the readings that she did on that evening.
The writer has since settled at the Macdowell Colony in New Hampshire, USA. The announcement of Kioko and other fellows at the residency was made on October 9 this year.
“MacDowell is honored to provide time and space at our bucolic property for these remarkable individuals to investigate, imagine, and create new works of art,” said executive director Philip Himberg. “They represent a wide and diverse range of artistic voices, reflecting a truly diverse landscape of art makers in our country and across the globe.”
