NLNG Nigeria Prize for Literature 2024 shortlist announced

The NLNG Nigeria Prize for Literature 2024 shortlist was announced in Lagos, Nigeria on Monday, September 9, 2024.

Since 2004, the Nigeria Prize for Literature worth US$100,000 has celebrated Nigerian authors in the four genres of fiction, poetry, drama, and children’s literature. Sponsored annually by oil firm NLNG, some of the winners have been Obari Gomba, Romeo Oriogun, Cheluchi Onyemelukwe-Onuobia, Jude Idada, Soji Cole, Ikeogu Oke, Abubakar Adam Ibrahim, Sam Ukala, Tade Ipadeola, and Chika Unigwe.

For 2024, the prize focus is children’s literature and the jury comprises Prof Saleh Adu (Chairman), Prof Vicky Sylvester, Dr Igudia Osarobu, and Kenyan judge Chris Okemwa. There were 163 entries received for the year and NLNG Nigeria Literature Prize advisory chair Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo and board member Ahmed Yerima announced the longlist on July 13.

The shortlist which came after a book party in Lagos was announced on Monday and features;

  • A Father’s Pride, Ndidi Chiazor-Enenmor.
  • The Road does not End, Familoni Oluranti Olubunmi
  • Wish Maker, Uchechukwu Peter Umezurike.

The Board stated: “A Father’s Pride by Ndidi Chiazor-Enenmo is a touching story that delves into the complex relationship between a father and his children, highlighting their struggles with love, forgiveness, and understanding. Written in clear and accessible language, it captures emotions that resonate deeply with readers.

The Road Does Not End by Familoni Oluranti Olubunmi addresses the critical issue of child labour in society. The book explores resilience and human connection themes, emphasising the importance of relationships and the need for continuous self-improvement.

Wish Maker by Uchechukwu Peter Umezurike is set in a riverine village and combines suspense, engagement, inspiration, and entertainment. It weaves moral lessons and elements of magic realism, captivating young readers. The Board praised its language and meticulous editing,” the Board concluded.

The Advisory Board will announce the winner on October 11, 2024.
