Nnedi Okorafor won the Lodestar Award for Best Young Adult Book at the Hugo Awards 2023 in Chengdu, China on Saturday, October 21, 2023. The Best Fan Writer award went to Chris M. Barkley.
The Hugo and Astounding Awards, organized by the World Science Fiction Society, are awarded for the best science fiction or fantasy works and achievements of the previous year. Named after the founder of the science fiction magazine Amazing Stories Hugo Gernsback, they are handed out at the annual World Science Fiction Convention. Previous winners include Isaac Asimov, Larry Niven, Arthur C. Clarke, J. K. Rowling, Nnedi Okorafor, N.K. Jemisin, and many more.
The finalists for this year’s awards were announced at the World Science Fiction Convention on July 6 before the ceremony on Saturday. These are the writers of African descent (African or Black) who won in their categories;
