Noo Saro-Wiwa won travel book of the year at the Edward Stanford Travel Book Awards 2025 on Thursday, March 6, 2025.

The Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards, presented by Viking Cruises, celebrate the world’s best travel writers. The UK-based prize comprises the Edward Stanford Travel Book of the Year, the Viking Award for Fiction with a Sense of Place, the Bradt Travel Guides New Travel Writer of the Year, and the Children’s Travel Book of the Year. Novuyo Rosa Tshuma won in the fiction category in 2019.

For 2024, submissions were judged by a panel of travel writers, Stanfords and Viking team members, and literary experts, and the shortlists were announced on Saturday, December 7. The winners were announced with Noo Saro-Wiwa’s Black Ghosts: A Journey Into the Lives of Africans in China winning travel book of the year.

Noo Saro-Wiwa said, “Woke up to this news! Couldn’t make the award ceremony last night as I’m currently in the Far East. I’m so honoured to have been shortlisted in the company of such fine writers. Many thanks to my agent, Elise Dillsworth, my editor Ellah Wakatama, all the folks at @canongatebooks, the judges (including @shafikmeghji @nofixedplans) and the Miles Morland Foundation, which funded my travels around China. And biggest thanks to @stanfordstravel for giving me this award and supporting my book so assiduously.
