Palestine Book Awards 2023 shortlists announced

The shortlists for the Palestine Book Awards 2023 were announced on Thursday, July 20, 2023.

The Palestine Book Awards were set up to honour the best new books about any aspect of Palestine in English in 2012. Some of the winners have been Isabella Hammad, Noura Erakat, Nabil Anani, Ghassan Zaqtanhas, Reja-e Busailah, Susan Abulhawa, Rashid Khalidi, Nathalie Handal, Finbarr Barry Flood, Salim Tamari, Sonia Nimir and Marcia Lynx Qualey.

The jury for 2023 is comprised of University of East London Senior Lecturer Dr Afaf Jabiri, University of Leicester Researcher in Sociology Dr Ashjan Ajour, Arabi21 Editor-in-Chief Feras Abu Helal, Al-Hiwar TV journalist Dr Ibrahim Darwish, SOAS University of London member of the centre for Palestine studies Prof Nur Masalha, and award-winning Arabic-English literary translator Sawad Hussain. From the 55 works submitted, the writers have been shortlisted;

  • Ahed Tamimi and Dena Takruri, They Called Me a Lioness: A Palestinian Girl’s Fight for Freedom
  • Dareen Tatour, I Sing From the Window of Exile
  • Ibrahim Muhawi (Translator), Hussein Barghouthi (author), Among the Almond Trees: A Palestinian Memoir
  • Mahmoud Najib (Translator), Ghassan Kanafani (author), On Zionist Literature
  • Nadim Bawalsa, Transnational Palestine: Migration and the Right of Return before 1948
  • Ranya Abdelrahman (Translator), Samira Azzam (Author), Out of Time: The Collected Short Stories of Samira Azzam
  • Tahrir Hamdi, Imagining Palestine: Cultures of Exile and National Identity

The winners will be announced in London this November.
